PUPPY CITY - TOY BREEDS

DIRECTIONS 718-332-3400

The diminutive size and winsome expressions of Toy dogs illustrate the main function of this Group: to embody sheer delight. Don't let their tiny statue fool you, though - - many Toys are tough as nails. If you haven't yet experienced the barking of an angry Chihuahua, for example, well, just wait. Incidentally, small breeds may be found in every Group, not just the Toy Group. We advise everyone to seriously consider getting a small breed, when appropriate, if for no other reason than to minimize some of the problems inherent in canines such as shedding, creating messes and cost of care. And training aside, it's still easier to control a ten-pound dog than it is one ten times that size.)

Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is a compact, short-backed, active toy dog. He has a soft, dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured outer coat. His heavily plumed tail is set high and lies flat on his back. He is alert in character, exhibits intelligence in expression, is buoyant in deportment, and is inquisitive by nature. The Pomeranian is cocky, commanding, and animated as he gaits. He is sound in composition and action.
Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is more than small; he's tiny. His adorable, apple-shaped head and big moist eyes make him nearly irresistible to kids. This sassy charmer is a healthy dog, but he is fragile. He likes to bark and scamper around, but is mainly an indoor dog, not able to tolerate cold weather.

Maltese
Despite his size the Maltese is without fear. The Maltese is a good choice for people who live in small apartments because of his size, but for the same reason it is not a good candidate for those with small children, unless the owner can provide constant supervision.

Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, alert toy dog with long flowing double coat. Befitting his noble Chinese ancestry as a highly valued, prized companion and palace pet, the Shih Tzu is proud of bearing, has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. Although there has always been considerable size variation, the Shih Tzu must be compact, solid, carrying good weight and substance.

Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier is a brave little dog, highly energetic and adventurous. It is very affectionate with its owner and does best with older children. Training this dog is easy, but requires a little patience. This dog makes a great companion as it loves and thrives on human attention. Some Yorkies especially love to travel around with their owners in the car, on errands or even long trips. The Yorkshire may be reserved with people that it does not know and they may get snappy if frightened or teased. The terrier makes a good little watchdog and though it tends to bark it can be taught not to do so. These sweet and loving little dogs are full grown in two years

Pekingese
The Pekingese is a well-balanced, compact dog with heavy front and lighter hindquarters. It must suggest its Chinese origin in its directness, independence, individuality and expression. Its image is lionlike. It should imply courage, boldness and self-esteem rather than prettiness, daintiness or delicacy.

Mini Pinscher
The Miniature Pinscher is structurally a well balanced, sturdy, compact, short-coupled, smooth-coated dog. He naturally is well groomed, proud, vigorous and alert. Characteristic traits are his hackney-like action, fearless animation, complete self-possession, and his spirited presence.

Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso is known in Tibet as ''Bark Lion Sentinel Dog.'' His primary function was that of a police watchdog. His keen intelligence and acute hearing and instincts for identifying friends from strangers made him uniquely suited for the role of a watchdog. The Lhasa Apso's coat needs regular grooming. Due to his small size the Lhasa Apso makes an ideal companion for the apartment dweller

Papillon
The Papillon is a small, friendly, elegant toy dog of fine-boned structure, light, dainty and of lively action; distinguished from other breeds by its beautiful butterfly-like ears. The Papillon is a happy dog who makes a great house pet. Papillons make a very good watch dog, alerting their owners of strangers. The coat requires minimal grooming, but to prevent matting the coat should be groomed at least once a week.
